ÇYoumayrecallsomefavouritemomentsontheFalcondiscussedin
detailinthepreviousissueofMaggieoverthearrivalofapre-
prerelease(Ikidyounot)versionofagamecalledüOfLasersand
Men..ÇAtthetime,itwasaonelevelonlyprecursorofmuch
betterthingstocome,andwhilsttheauthor,ArnaudLinzwas
codingflatout,youwereinvitedtoregisterasitwasshareware
togetafinishedversionassoonaspossible..
Ididandwaspleasantlysurprisedtogetaletterfromtheman
himselfshortlyafter,givingmeaprogressreporttotheeffect
thatmostthingsweredoneexceptforthemostlabourintensive
part,thegraphics..Theseheldupmattersuntilwellafter
Christmas(andarestillgivingproblemsincertainareasnow,but
moreofthatlateretc..)However,lastmonth,anäalmostÇfinished
versionofthegame,alongwithatwo-levelunregisteredversion
hurleditselfintomyletterbox(itisacommunalletterboxI
sharewithhalfadozenothers,butIkeepasharplookoutfor
jiffypackages)..
Eagerly,Iloadeditupandencounteredamuchfullertitle
sequencewithahardrockstyleMODsoundtrackblastingoutofmy
speakers..Theregisteredversiongavemeachoiceoffifteen
differentlevels,soIplumpedforthefirstavailable..
Firstsurprise,thegraphicsaremuchmorecompletethanbefore,
asalotofnewmaterialhasbeengained..Thefloorisnowalso
texture-mapped,stone,wood,evenareflectivelayerinsome
places,inspirationhasbeenobviouslyderivedfromthatwordon
everyPCownerslips,üDoomÇ,withsomeofthewall-graphicsleaning
distinctlyinthatdirection..Inadditionyouhavethingslike
raisedwalkwayswithseeminglybottomlesschasms,slopingsections
ofpassageway(youcan'tgodown,unfortunately)..Thedepth-
cueingeffectofincreasingdarknessthefurtheryoulookintothe
distancehasbeenretained..Someoftheoriginalgraphicsfrom
theearlierversionhavebeenretained,forexampleyoustillget
purplegardenfurnitureinsomeoftherooms..Youcanfindsuch
strangethingsasaperfectlykepttreeunderground??Forthis
partofthegame,therevamphasbeensuccessful,buttheauthor
promisesfurtherimprovementsinthefuture..
Surprisetwoisthefactthatsomegraphicswerenotabletomake
itintimeforthisfirstproperv1.00release..Irefertothe
characterspriteswhichwerecorruptedbyavirusaccordingtothe
author,andinsteadyoufindyourselfshootingatlarge
rectangularbluepiecesofcardboardwithahelmetedheadattached
asthisisallthatcouldbedoneatsuchshortnotice..The
releaseofthisversioninthatconditionwasbroughtaboutbythe
authorgoingonafive-monthvisittotheUnitedStates,andbeing
unabletowaitanylonger..Thatsaid,hehasadvisedmethathis
graphicspersonwillsendthenewcharacterspritefilesinmid-
March,whichisaboutnow,andIhopetoadviseshortlythatthese
havebeenreceivedtofinalisethisreview..
Anothergainforthisversionisthataswellastitlemusic,some
in-gamesoundeffectsarenowpresent..Thesearefewinnumber,
reasonable,butagainimprovementsarepromisedforthefuture..
Theyarethingslikeafairlystandard'phaser'soundforyour
gun,theautomaticdoor'swish'onthe'USSEnterprise'forthe
doors,somegroans/screamsfortheenemiesyoukill,and
appropriatesamplesforasuccessfulorfailedconclusiontoa
level..
Butisitanygood,youask..Wellyesitis..itisstillas
toughasever,yourbody-armour/shieldnowregenerates(my
suggestiontotheauthor!)butthisisoffsetbytheincreased
numbersofbadguys,uptofortyatanyonetimethatcanbefound
wanderingonthelevel..Thesparsesoundeffectsdoaddtothe
tenseatmosphere,astheyvaryinintensityaccordingtohowfar
somethingisawayfromyou,soifadoor'swishes'openanditis
atapreviouslyunsuspectedear-bruisinglevel,yoususpect
troublemaybeonthemenuandthatsomejumpingoutofyourskin
maybeinorder..
Itgetsverylonelyifyouarewanderingaroundonacomplexlevel
chock-fullofpassagewaysandhiddencorners,whenthereareno
moreofyourfellowcomputer-generatedcomradesleft,andstilla
dozenofthebluebadguyswhocouldbeäanywhereÇright?Likejust
aroundthatnextcorner!!
ThisissubtlerandscarierinmanywaysthanüDoomÇwhichismuch
moreofastraightmassacre-em-upaftertheinitialnoveltyvalue
ofsomeofthebadguyshasworn-off..üLasersandMenÇisthesort
ofgamethatFreddieKrugermightliketoplayforreal!Theblue
guysarestillquitedifficulttokill,needingseveralhitsin
somecases,andmovearoundalevelunlikeüDoomÇorüWolfensteinÇ,
givinganimpressionofmalignpurposeandintelligence..Ifyou
foundsomeoneengrossedinthisgameandshouted"Boo!"intheir
ear,youcoulddoquitealotofphysicalandpsychologicaldamage
tothem..
Technically,useismadeoftheDSP,givinganapproximate40%
speedincrease,althoughtheauthorsuggeststhateitheritis
slowforthistypeofgame,orhisprogrammingis..Speedcanbe
describedas'adequate'forthejobinhand,althoughIhadat
leastonePCownerwishinghecouldpushinthe'turbo'buttonto
speedupthegame..(MindyouitwasaPCownerwithsuchahigh-
specPCthatitallowedyoutorunfromoneendofalevelinüDoomÇ
totheotherinaboutfourandahalfseconds..)
AlthoughthetemptationasanAtari-phileisthere,Iwouldnot
considerthisasafull-scalecompetitorandanequalmatchto
üDoomÇ..Forexampleyouarenotrestrictedtoa320x200format
inüDoomÇ,thereismuchmuchmoreinthatgame,butinstead,I
wouldconsiderüLasersandMenÇtobemorelikeüCastleWolfensteinÇ
withknobson.Lotsofknobsaddedoninfact..Anyway,the
gameplayistotallydifferentfromüDoomÇandmuchmoresubtleand
suspense-buildingthanthe'rush-through-andblast'youget
there..

AsImentionedearlier,theauthorispresentlyenjoyinglifein
theUSAalthoughregistrationscanbesenttohisnewaddress
therebeforethe1stofAugustwhenhereturnstoFrance..From
there,enhancementswillbeaddedtothegame..Sofar,better
graphicsandsoundeffectsarepromised,improveddialoguewith
othercomputerplayers,eitherasimultaneoustwoplayeronscreen
option,oranetworkedtwoFalcondualplayergame..Alsoalevel
editoranddesigner,optimisationandspeedingupetc..
Hehasclearlygivenhimselfalottodo,butthisisnotto
detractfromthefirstproperreleaseversion1.00reviewedhere..
